I am starting to hate this book. First off, my favorite character, Penda, has been killed off. She was the strongest character in the book and added a sense of power and independence to the book. It did take me a second to figure out that she died and I was very disappointed.
I was also upset that N'Deye has chosen polygamy and wants to be Bakayoko's second wife. She was completely against it at the beginning but know has decided that she loves Bakayoko enough to be his second wife. She has gone from being someone who hated the traditional African ways to one that will now follow them. This just bothers me so much. She needs to stick with an idea and go with it.
I was also upset when Penda died because she symbolized "the new breed of women “and the blind woman looked up to her. She was also very important in her community. I wasn't necessarily upset about N'Deye's change I just thought that she wanted to embrace her culture instead of resent it.
ReplyDeleteN'Deye seems to change her beleifs based on what's happening to her, not the general idea or culture. This happened with the French people who said rude things about her, she decided she no longer liked them because a few of them aren't good. She is embracing her own culture, but at the expense of huge generalizations. Then later, she opposed polygamy until it worked in her favor. She really does need to get some firm ideas.
ReplyDeleteI was disappointed with N'Deye's acceptance of polyagamy as well, but I also was not suprised. I felt like her rejection of polygamy was never really because she felt it was morally wrong, or because she understood the negative impact it has on women. I felt like her she looked down on polygamy because she had been (in a sense) brainwashed by the French into believing it was wrong. She felt it was undignified because it was something her society had, that the white men did not, and she therefore assumed it was something she should look down apon.
